“This Week in Syria”

Friday death
Saturday grief
Sunday depression
Monday anger
Tuesday oppression
Wednesday censorship
Thursday threats
Somebody dies each Friday

The protesters gather
The president preaches
Somebody dies each Friday

The violence to citizens
Tempers their mettle
Somebody dies each Friday

Khaled Hamed Wissam Ibtissam
Jamal Talal Ahmad Muhammad
Somebody dies each Friday

Young people march toward an altar
Regime accepts their sacrifice
Somebody dies each Friday

A river of refugees flowing to Turkey
Army tanks fail as levees
Somebody dies each Friday

The rhythm is rotten

The refrain “Somebody dies each Friday” was part of a news story on Syria that I heard this evening. Some lines you just can’t get out of your head.

  2. Robin Yassin-Kassab says:

    good poem
